Die Bedeutung des Faktors Qualität für die Entwicklung des Marktes für ökologische Produkte Organic Eprints
Oppermann, Rainer.

Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Daniel, Claudia.
Abstract: The effect of exclusion fences on the colonization of broccoli and kohlrabi by the Swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The Swede midge Contarinia nasturtii (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is an important and wide spread pest in Europe. In Swiss organic vegetable production only the expensive product “Audienz“ (active matter: Spinosad) is permitted. In addition, netting the entire crop surface can exclude the Swede midges from crops, but it has a negative influence on the microclimatic conditions and the labour and capital cost are often too high. Since it is known, that several vegetable key pest species spread within the crop or only a few centimetres above it, the use of vertical exclusion fences has been developed in Canada....

Die Wirkung von Myco-Sin gegen den Apfelschorf in Abhängigkeit der Schwefelformulierung Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Böger, N.; Fuchs, Jacques G..

Do organic livestock farms differ from low-input conventional ones? Insights based on beef cattle in southern Europe Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J..
The objective of this study is to determine whether there are clear differences between conventional (but low-input) and organic beef cattle farms located in the Southwest of Spain. 33 conventional and 30 organic farms were compared in terms of structure, technical management, and performance. The results showed that organic farms (‘All Organic’) mainly focus on the production of calves at weaning age which are fattened in conventional holdings (‘Organic 1’; n= 22). The remaining organic farms (‘Organic 2’; n=11) showed to participate in almost all stages of the agri-value chain. ‘Conventional’ farms were mainly dedicated to producing calves at weaning age (similarly to Organic 1). Organic 1 had the smallest herd size: 80.18 LU, p<0.05). Organic 2...

Does it make sense to buy locally produced organic products? Organic Eprints
Vanzetti, David; Wynen, Els.
Enthusiasts of the organically grown food industry often espouse a preference for produce grown in the local region, and suggest that consumers should buy locally produced organic products. One reason consumers buy organic products is to improve the environment. There is a perception that transporting foods long distances is wasteful, in part because transport costs are not appropriately priced to include all externalities. Does this make sense? The focus of this paper is to examine conceptually how trade can contribute to a more environmentally-sound way of supplying agricultural products to consumers, even when transport costs are adequately taken into account. An example from the international wheat trade illustrates this point.

Eco-functional intensification by cereal-grain legume intercropping in organic farming systems for increased yields, reduced weeds and improved grain protein concentration Organic Eprints
Bedoussac, Laurent; Journet, Etienne-Pascal; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Naudin, Christophe; Corre-Hellou, Guénaëlle; Prieur, Loïc; Jensen, Erik Steen; Justes, Eric.
Organic farming is based on to rely on a higher cropping systems diversity than its conventional counterpart and is regarded as one prototype to enhance the sustainability of agriculture and cereal-rich cropping systems. Nevertheless, organic arable crop rotations in temperate regions consist mainly of sole crops (SC; pure stands), with diverse pastures in farming systems with livestock being an exception (Hauggaard-Nielsen et al. 2001b). In organic farming, nitrogen (N) availability can be limiting especially in the absence of livestock (David et al. 2005ab) and causes cereal yield depressions and lower protein contents. For these reasons, integrating legumes with symbiotic fixation of atmospheric N2 is essential for balancing nitrogen exports from the...

Ecological Apple Production: a Comparison of Organic and Integrated Apple-growing Organic Eprints
Bertschinger, Lukas; Mouron, Patrik; Dolega, Ewa; Höhn, Heinrich; Holliger, Eduard; Husistein, Alfred; Schmid, Andi; Siegfried, Werner; Widmer, Albert; Zürcher, Matthias; Weibel, Franco.
In 1995, an experiment was planted at Wädenswil for comparing organic and integrated apple production. The overall goal of this experiment was to develop a data set which allows for an objective overall comparison of the two production concepts. Horticultural, ecological and economical traits were looked at. In practical terms, the study should particularly clarify how suitable the two systems are for producing marketable fresh fruit under Swiss conditions. The approach of an on-station comparison with a split-plot design with 3 replicate blocks and the factors “production system” (1st factor) and “variety” (2nd factor) was chosen. Ninety-four percent of Swiss apple acreage is managed according to integrated production, and 5% according to organic...

Ecological economics and organic farming Organic Eprints
Kledal, Paul Rye; Kjeldsen, Chris; Refsgaard, Karen; Söderbaum, Peter.
Ecological economics (EE) is proposed as an approach to decision making and planning in organic farming. It is argued that EE is better suited for this task than the conventional neoclassical economy approach. The contribution that EE can make to the organic farming movement is apparent on the ontological level, through its focus on socio-economic systems as nested subsystems of the ecosystem. In addition, EE’s stance on the issues of allocation, distribution and scale seems to constitute a more appropriate conceptualization about the interaction between socio-economic systems and the environment, which is more closely aligned to the principal aims of the organic farming movement. The concepts of time and scale are used as examples of how EE, with input...

Effect of different sowing densities in mixed cultivation of blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) with spring crops on yield and quality Organic Eprints
Böhm, Herwart; Bramm, Andreas; Aulrich, Karen; Rühl, Gerhard.
The aim of this investigation was to optimise the yield percentage of blue lupins in mixed cropping systems. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in Northern Germany (Institute of Organic Farming near Hamburg and Institute of Plant and Soil Science at Braunschweig). Two types of blue lupins, the determinate and branched type were cultivated together with spring barley, spring wheat or fodder peas in different seeding ratios (SR): 50% : 50%, 62,5% : 37,5 % and 75% : 25% of the respective pure cropping seeding rate. We present data on total grain yield, yield of blue lupins, yield percentage of blue lupins, protein content, and protein yield. Total grain yield decreased with increasing SR of blue lupins whereas, in contrast, the yield of blue...
